Help!!

Q1. Help!!! I want to hook up my computer to the Internet. What do I do?

Ans. Have you signed up with us for internet access? If not please do that, first (sign up for a PPP account if you want to browse the World Wide Web).

Excellent! Now that you have a PPP account with us, do you have the suitable software (such as a Browser, or TCP/IP software)? If your answer is "Yes" then you only need a few instructions to set up your computer. Click here. On the other hand, if you do not have the required software yet, then you need to first download software (Free!) from here, install it on your computer, and then pick up the instructions later.

And by the way, you do need a modem ! (These are our dialup phone numbers)

Q.2 I have two modems and two telephone lines. Can I connect to two different ISPs with these modems?

Ans. You cannot connect to 2 ISP's simultaneously. You can have only one default route to the Internet on your machine.

You could, however, connect to us on both lines via Win 98. It will cost you a bit extra. You will get more bandwidth (2x modem speed). It will cost $29.95/month for the ability to dial 2 lines into us bonded as one.

Q.3 I have a modem which is supposed to work with Cinenet, but I am not able to log on, or I get disconnected quickly, or I get a very slow connection. What could be happening?

Ans. While most modems work appropriately, a few bugs have been noticed and. Please examine whether your modem falls in this category:

I have upgraded from 56K Flex to V.90 and get slower speed:

This upgrade is not recommended. However, if you like, you can do the following (for Windows 95 machines).

      a) Go to the Control Panel from the Start Menu through "Settings"
      b) Select Modems.
      c) From the Modem box, select your modem type, and then select Properties
      d) Then select the Connections tab
      e) Then select advanced
      f) Now, in the 'extra settings' type in 4 commas: ,,,,

      This should solve the problem.

    USR Courier/Sportster:

The latest flash for the Courier is dated 7/31/97 and works flawlessly with the Livingston PM3 which we use. To get this flash update, go to

    ftp://ftp.usr.com/pub/usr/dl07/setup.exe

This software is a wizard for USR Sportsters and Couriers for Windows based machines. It first detects the USR modem(s) on your system. Then it dials into USR's bbs and downloads any upgrades that are available.

Gateway 2000 PC with USR Telepath modems:

USR TelePath modems in Gateway 2000 systems need the following fix:

    Go to: http://www.gateway2000.com

Click on "Hardware" under "Software Library" on the left
    Click on "Desktop/Tower Systems"
    Click on "Windows 95"
    Click on "Modem upgrades"

Then download 7502149.exe which is ~1mb long at the top of the list.

The V.8bis problem for some modems

Another issue we can't do a lot about is V.8bis. V.8 is part of V.34, and V.8bis is an updated version for K56flex. This is a tone at the start of modem negotiation. A standard compliant modem should be able to handle it, and most can. However, some older modems (especially 14.4K units) and lower end current modems choke on it. The usual result is a lower connect speed.

The 'fix' for that is 3 or 4 commas at the end of the dial string. That makes the mode pause after connection and before starting negotiation, and it misses the V.8bis tone.

Which init string does Acer Aspire/Rockwell RSS fall on?

You can find a list of 56k modem init strings on www.56k.com

    Also, try http://www.acercomponents.com/tech/faq/admodem.htm.

    Q.4 How do I disable call-waiting?

Ans. You have to insert *70 in the dial string, so if you have 789-1200 as the phone number you will have to put in *70,7891200.

Q.5 Now that I am happily hooked on to the internet through Cinenet, how to I make my web page?

Ans. Our User Zone page talks much about this. You can also access the Starting Point for creating your own web page from here.
